Violence in Film (analysis)

Violence in Film The purpose of this essay is an exploration of Walter Benjamin's concept of “divine violence” which he defines in his essay Critique of Violence as the complementary opposite of “mythic” or state-founding violence. The idea for this paper arose from the question, “What would divine violence look like in film? Is it possible to represent divine violence? Is it possible for films to participate in divine violence?” My source for this examination of the possibilities of divine violence in cinema is Slavoj Žižek's recent book, Violence (2008)* in which he analyzes several different types of violence under the premise that violence is not always “bad” violence, and that in fact the most visible violence is rarely the “worst”. Starting from this premise I will attempt to extract Žižek's ideas of what constitutes divine violence as it contrasts other types of violence. Then I will look at sever...

The Cabin In The Woods Bestiary

So my analysis of The Cabin in the Woods is taking longer than I expected, mostly because I keep getting distracted by how awesome the movie is . One thing I couldn't help making was this, a list of all the possible monsters which could have terrorized the poor occupants of the cabin (in the woods). Top 5 (Favorite) Classic Disney Animated Features

Like many others out there, I grew up with many of the classic Disney cartoons on my television. Disney, to some extent, taught us how to grow up. But how do these movies look today, revisited with a more mature eye (and hopefully brain)? How did they look to our parents watching them over our shoulders? One thing is undeniable: Disney undoubtedly has its faults ( racism ). On the other hand, however, it's hard to deny the extraordinary amount of talent that went into making the early Disney animations, both in terms of aesthetics and thematics. With that in mind, I rewatched several of what I remembered as my favorite of the original Disney feature length cartoons (as opposed to the modern classics of the 90's renaissance) and reevaluated them. So, here are my Top 5 classic Disney animated features. Also I grabbed all the amazing title screens for your enjoyment.

Getting Down to the Basics of Enemy

Enemy is the latest film from Denis Villeneuve, the Canadian director behind last year's Prisoners , and it is more enigmatic than your average thriller. It is the kind of film, like Johnathan Glazer's Under the Skin , which can leave audiences unsure of even the simplest details of what they've just witnessed. However, it's not the case either that the plot is simply impenetrable (e.g. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy ) or that the presentation is unusually surreal or artistic (e.g. Mulholland Drive ). At it's most basic level, the story is about a man (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who discovers that he has an identical double (also played by Jake Gyllenhaal), and what he does to investigate the situation. Where the confusion comes in is Villeneuve's use of symbolism (spiders) and the way all of the enigmatic details of the narrative come together to form something greater than the sum of their parts. The Lorax (review)

I. Hate. Musicals. For me there are only two musicals: Singing In The Rain (1952) and Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933). While this may be due to the fact that I haven't seen all that many musicals, every time I try to watch more I see that musicals just aren't made for me. I just wanted to plant that seed before digging into my review of The Lorax , an animated musical from the director duo who brought us Despicable Me two years ago. Was The Lorax good enough to overcome my general distaste for musicals? No, not really; but there is something in it that I think is worth talking about. So let's get right into it.
