Top 5 (Favorite) Classic Disney Animated Features

Like many others out there, I grew up with many of the classic Disney cartoons on my television. Disney, to some extent, taught us how to grow up. But how do these movies look today, revisited with a more mature eye (and hopefully brain)? How did they look to our parents watching them over our shoulders? One thing is undeniable: Disney undoubtedly has its faults ( racism ). On the other hand, however, it's hard to deny the extraordinary amount of talent that went into making the early Disney animations, both in terms of aesthetics and thematics. With that in mind, I rewatched several of what I remembered as my favorite of the original Disney feature length cartoons (as opposed to the modern classics of the 90's renaissance) and reevaluated them. So, here are my Top 5 classic Disney animated features. Also I grabbed all the amazing title screens for your enjoyment.

The Italian Job (review & comparison)

I finally got around to watching the original 1969 version of The Italian Job , and since the 2003 remake was sort of a part of my "childhood" (it was the first DVD I ever owned) I'd like to compare the two. Considering how iconic the original is and how some critics received the remake this will probably read for most people like a defense of the remake. So just to be upfront with my opinion so you can stop reading if you disagree, I genuinely enjoy most of the remake more than the original but can see that if I grew up with the original I might have liked it more. But let's talk about what makes both of these movies great and how the remake remade the original.

Spider (review)

I know at the end of my Teeth review I promised to review something normal this week. And although (compared to Teeth ) David Cronenberg's Spider (2002) is a relatively normal psychological thriller, I also know I'm going to talk about it in an openly Freudian way. So to those hoping for something like my Italian Job review , where I just talk about movies being movies and stuff, I am sorry. Spider is worth it though. Expect spoilers throughout.

Cinematography 101 (analysis)

With the success of my recent didactic historical article focusing on The Big Sleep, I figured I'd take another shot (sorry about the pun) at writing an educational article for anyone looking to get into film. I feel that with the explosion of amateur film critics (such as myself) and the growing unease with movies which prioritize "style over substance" (a criticism I often make), something of the artistry inherent to film has been lost. Take adaptations of popular literature for example: the most common criticisms are often limited to which elements from the book were included or left out. While this can be an interesting discussion to have, the nature of film as a storytelling medium carries with it a different kind of art, and its beauty comes from the technique with which its story is told. And while it is very easy to come away from a film with the sense that the director of photography knew what she was doing, sometimes explaining that artistic vision can be
